The Gangotri Temple was originally built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa. It was later restored in the 19th century. The temple is an important site in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. It is closed from Diwali and reopens on Akshaya Tritiya.

Gangotri is well-connected by road to major towns in Uttarakhand. State Transport Buses and private taxis operate regularly from cities like Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun.
Nearest railway stations: Rishikesh (234 km), Haridwar (261 km), and Dehradun (240 km). From these stations, buses or taxis are available to Uttarkashi and further to Gangotri.
Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. From the airport, you can take a taxi or bus to Uttarkashi and then proceed to Gangotri.
The best time to visit is between May and October. Avoid the monsoon season (July-August) due to landslides and heavy rainfall. Winters: The temple may be closed during heavy snowfall as the region becomes inaccessible.
