It was believed that as long as the Shaligram received proper worship, the kingdom would remain prosperous and unharmed. Historical accounts suggest that Marthanda Varma of Travancore faced challenges in defeating Kayamkulam due to the Shaligram's protective power. Eventually, Ramayyan Dalawa, a commander of Travancore, is said to have stolen the Shaligram and taken it to Thiruvarpu Madam in Kottayam.
