Dewas was the capital of two princely states during British India. Founded in the 18th century by the Pawar brothers, it was divided into Dewas Junior and Senior states. Each branch ruled separately after 1841. Post-independence, these states joined Madhya Bharat, later merging into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
