Chenganmaaleeswarar Temple History and Significance

The temple is believed to have been constructed during the 3rd century CE by the early Chola Emperor Kochengata Chola. Inscriptions from the 12th century CE by Cholas and later period inscriptions belonging to Nayak Kings are found on the walls of the temple. According to legend, Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva here with 1008 lotus flowers to obtain the divine Chakrayudha (discus). Lord Shiva made the last flower vanish, testing Vishnu's devotion. In response, Vishnu offered one of his own eyes as the final flower, completing the pooja. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the Chakrayudha. This act led to the deity being named Chenganmaaleeswarar, and the place being called Chenganmaal.
