The Birla Mandirs are a series of Hindu temples built by the Birla family across India. The first temple, Laxminarayan Temple in Delhi, was completed in 1939. These temples were constructed to fill a cultural void in cities like Delhi and Bhopal, which lacked grand Hindu temples due to historical restrictions.
During the Mughal period, the construction of temples with shikharas was prohibited. The Birla family used modern technology to build these temples, loosely following the Nagara style. The temples are designed to be spacious and suitable for congregational worship.
Later temples were built using marble or sandstone, often in the classical Māru-Gurjara architectural style. The Birla temples have become major landmarks in Indian cities, combining religious worship with public institutions that contribute to civil society.
