The temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The temple is believed to have been constructed during the Pallava period and later expanded by the Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties. Inscriptions refer to the location as Kaithavachaturvedi Mangalam. The temple is associated with the legend of the Bhutaganas, who, after mocking Lord Shiva during his Ananda Thandavam, were banished from Kailash. Seeking forgiveness, they performed penance and worshipped Lord Perumal, who guided them to bathe in Adisesha Theertha and pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva forgave them, and in gratitude, the Bhutaganas constructed temples for Perumal, Lord Shiva (Bhutapureeswarar), and Jayabhutha Vinayagar under a sacred tree.
