Bhavani Amman Temple History and Significance

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Bhavani Amman is identified with Mayadevi, the sister of Lord Krishna. Legend narrates that King Kamsa, upon hearing a prophecy about his demise at the hands of Devaki's eighth child, imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva. When Lord Krishna was born, Vasudeva secretly exchanged him with Mayadevi, the daughter of Nandagopan and Yashoda. When Kamsa attempted to kill the infant Mayadevi, she transformed into a divine form, warned him of his impending doom, and ascended to the heavens. It is believed that Mayadevi later manifested as Bhavani Amman in Periyapalayam to alleviate human suffering and spread prosperity. Additionally, local folklore recounts that a cowherd discovered the deity's presence when a cow offered milk to a particular rock daily.
