Believed to have been established by Sage Parashurama, Azhakotha Mahadeva Temple is an architectural masterpiece that uniquely combines the spiritual essence of both Vishnu and Shiva. Historically, the temple was under the jurisdiction of the Palakkad kings and managed by the Paniyyormanakkal Namboothiris. Due to conflicts, the Namboothiris relocated to Malappuram with the assistance of the Kozhikode rulers (Zamorin). In response, the Palakkad king invited Brahmin families from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, establishing 51 Agraharams around the temple. The temple suffered destruction during Tipu Sultan's invasions but was later reconstructed under the patronage of the Kozhikode Zamorin. Notably, the temple's Bhagavathy deity is worshipped in the form of Goddess Saraswathi.
