Azhakodi Devi Temple History and Significance

The temple's origins trace back to the era of the Samoothiri (Zamorin) rulers of Kozhikode. According to legend, the Samoothiri entrusted six of his generals with the temple, then known as 'Arikkodikkavu.' He also presented them with an idol of 'Bhavani Devi,' gifted to him by traders from Gujarat, instructing them to place it adjacent to the existing Bhagavathi idol in the sanctum sanctorum. Over time, 'Arikkodikkavu' evolved into the present-day Azhakodi Devi Mahakshethram. The temple houses seven maternal incarnations: Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, and Chamundi, along with a Sivalinga.
