According to legend, seven sages, including Athri and Kutsa, performed penance in Kanchipuram upon Lord Brahma's advice. They installed Shiva Lingams under their respective names, leading to the establishment of the Saptha Sthana temples. The original temple is believed to have been built during the Pallava period and was reconstructed in the 20th century. Kumbabhishekam ceremonies were conducted in 1999, 2002, and 2012 under the guidance of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Kanchi Mutt.
