The Arunachalesvara Temple, also known as Annamalaiyar Temple, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. It is located at the base of Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. The temple is significant to the Shaivism sect and is associated with the element of fire.
The temple's history dates back to the 9th century when it was built by the Chola dynasty. Later expansions were made by the Vijayanagara rulers of the Sangama, Saluva, and Tuluva dynasties. The temple complex covers 10 hectares and houses four gateway towers known as gopurams.
The tallest tower is the eastern tower, which has 11 stories and a height of 66 meters. The temple has numerous shrines, with those of Arunachalesvara and Unnamalai Amman being the most prominent. The temple complex also houses many halls, including the thousand-pillared hall built during the Vijayanagara period.
Tiruvannamalai is well-connected by road to major towns in Tamil Nadu. State Transport Buses and private taxis operate regularly from Chennai, Vellore, and Bangalore.

Nearest airport: Chennai International Airport (approximately 185 km away). From the airport, you can take a taxi or bus to Tiruvannamalai via connecting cities like Vellore.
The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant. Avoid the peak summer months (April to June) due to high temperatures.
