Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is located in Ananthagiri, Vikarabad, Telangana, about 75 km from Gachibowli, Hyderabad.As per the Skanda Purana, Rishi Markandeya installed the temple in Dvapara Yuga. He practiced yoga in Ananthagiri Hills and traveled daily to Kashi for a holy dip.One day, as Dwadashi began early, he couldn't go to Kashi. Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and brought the Ganges for his holy bath.Rajarshi Muchukunda, after defeating Kalayavana rakshasa, rested in Ananthagiri with a boon from devendra, that anyone disturbing his sleep would be burned to ashes.Kalayavana rakshsa took full control of Dwaraka and followed Lord Krishna and Balarama to Ananthagiri and spoil the sleep of Muchikunda and was killed.Krishna then appeared as Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy and blessed Muchukunda to become the Musi, also called as Muchukunda River.Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy also appeared before Markandeya and transformed into a chakra for him.The temple has idols of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
Around 400 years ago, Nizam Nawabs frequented Ananthagiri for hunting and relaxation, drawn by its tranquility.
