Legends Beliefs

Alwar Tirunagari was a large town during the Pandya kings' time. The name 'Alvar' in Tamil means people who spoke languages first and correctly. The temple is considered the birthplace of Nammalvar, the most prominent among the twelve Alvars Saints. Nammalvar contributed over a thousand verses to the Naalayira Divya Prabhandam, the Vaishnava canon.According to traditional scriptures, Nammalvar was born in 3059 BCE. He was born in a Mallar family at Thirukuravur (modern-day Alwarthirunagiri). As a child, he responded to no external stimuli, and his parents left him at the feet of the deity of Sri Adhinathar. The child then climbed into a hole in a tamarind tree and began to meditate. He stayed in this state for sixteen years until Madhurakavi Alvar, a Tamil poet and scholar, found him. Nammalvar broke his silence and answered a riddle posed by Madhurakavi, who then became his devotee.

A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines and two of its three bodies of water. The rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower, is 95 ft tall. The temple is located on the banks of the Thamiraparani River. The sacred water body in the temple is known as Brahma Theertham. The temple houses many paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana. There are 48 composite pillars with remarkable sculptures.

The Garuda Sevai utsavam in Vaikasi (May-June) features nine Garudasevai, where festival idols from the Nava Tirupathis shrines are brought on Garuda vahana. An idol of Nammalvar is also brought on an Anna Vahanam, and his paasurams dedicated to each of the nine temples are recited. The pasurams are chanted in the respective shrines. This festival draws thousands of visitors.

The rituals are performed four times a day: Kalasanthi at 8:00 a.m., Uchikalam at 12:00 p.m., Sayarakshai at 6:00 p.m., and Ardha Jamam at 8:00 p.m. Each ritual includes alangaram, neivethanam, and deepa aradanai for both Adinathar and Athinathanayagi. During the last step, nadasvaram and tavil are played, Vedas are recited, and worshippers prostrate themselves in front of the temple mast. Weekly, monthly, and fortnightly rituals are also performed.
