    The temple is said to be older than the Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala. According to legend, Bhrigu visited Vaikuntha and kicked Vishnu on the chest. Vishnu apologised and massaged Bhrigu's feet, impressing the sage. Lakshmi, outraged, left Vaikuntha, and Vishnu followed her to Earth, stepping first on this mountain.The temple priests show a huge depression on the mountain, believed to be Vishnu's footprint.
