Big Shock Before IPL 2026: BCCI Tells KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman Amid Rising Outrage

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken a decisive call involving Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, following rising public anger and political unease linked to developments in Bangladesh.

The move comes after KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan faced criticism for the franchise's decision to retain the Bangladeshi pacer for the IPL 2026 season.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board has formally directed KKR to release Mustafizur from their squad. The board had earlier adopted a cautious approach but shifted stance as the wider situation intensified.

"Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad," Saikia told ANI.

He added, "BCCI has also said that if they ask for any replacement, BCCI is going to allow that replacement."

Record auction price puts Mustafizur in spotlight

The controversy gathered momentum after KKR secured Mustafizur for Rs 9.20 crore at the December auction, the highest-ever bid for a Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history. The signing instantly drew attention, with the left-arm pacer becoming a focal point of debate beyond cricketing circles.

The timing of the purchase, combined with unrest in Bangladesh and strained diplomatic optics, placed both the franchise and the league under scrutiny. Public reaction in India grew sharper in the weeks that followed, eventually prompting the board's intervention.

Bowling plans disrupted for Kolkata Knight Riders

From a cricketing standpoint, the directive leaves KKR with a significant challenge just months before the season begins. Mustafizur was expected to play a central role as the team's death-overs specialist, particularly on the slower surfaces at Eden Gardens where his cutters and changes of pace are highly effective.

With the Bangladeshi pacer now out, added responsibility falls on Matheesha Pathirana to manage the final overs. The franchise may also need to lean more heavily on Indian quicks such as Harshit Rana and Umran Malik, or rethink its overseas combination altogether.

Strategically, KKR's balance had been built around a core that included Sunil Narine, Cameron Green and Pathirana. Removing one overseas bowler at this stage forces a rethink, with options ranging from reinforcing the Indian pace unit to adding an extra overseas batter like Rachin Ravindra.

The financial implications remain unresolved. KKR had committed Rs 9.20 crore to Mustafizur and will be keen for the IPL Governing Council to return the amount to their purse. While the BCCI has approved a replacement signing, there is no clarity yet on whether the full sum will be credited back.

If the funds are not restored, KKR could be limited to a lower-cost replacement, potentially affecting squad quality and planning. The issue is expected to be discussed further between the franchise and league officials in the coming weeks.

The episode also feeds into broader uncertainty surrounding India-Bangladesh cricketing ties. A white-ball bilateral series between the two nations was postponed last year, and while the Bangladesh Cricket Board has indicated a September window this year, the BCCI has not confirmed its participation.

Sources suggest the Indian board remains cautious and may avoid committing to the series unless the political and security situation in Bangladesh improves. As things stand, both franchise cricket and bilateral schedules appear closely tied to developments beyond the boundary ropes.
