'New Science': Arvind Kejriwal Questions Delhi CM's Understanding of Air Quality Index

Arvind Kejriwal has sharply criticised Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta after her recent explanation of pollution levels, questioning both her scientific understanding and the measures adopted by the government to manage air quality in the capital.

Kejriwal Accuses Government of Distorting Pollution Data

Writing on X, the AAP leader alleged that the administration was attempting to influence official air quality readings by targeting AQI monitoring points with water sprays.

"First point - The Chief Minister has at least accepted that wherever AQI monitors are installed, water spraying is being done there so that the truth about pollution doesn't reach the people of Delhi. In other words, a game is underway to hide the data and show clean air," Kejriwal wrote.

He also challenged Gupta over her comment equating AQI with temperature.

"Second point - When did this new science come about that AQI has now become temperature?" he added.

Concerns Rise Over Capital's Pollution Control Measures

These remarks come at a time when the BJP led Delhi government is facing intense scrutiny over its handling of deteriorating air quality. Viral clips shared online appear to show water jets being used close to air quality sensors, prompting questions over the credibility of recorded pollution levels.

Meanwhile, the capital continues to struggle with hazardous conditions. Monitoring agencies reported that the city's air quality remained deeply compromised, with daily averages crossing the 300 mark. Forecasts indicate the situation may get worse and move toward the severe category soon.

AQI Levels Edge Higher Across Delhi

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board placed the 24 hour average AQI at 314 at 4 PM on Monday, slightly higher than Sunday's figure of 308. Officials note that weather patterns and seasonal pollution sources are likely to push readings upward in the coming days.

Gupta Defends Action Taken at Pollution Hotspots

Rekha Gupta, speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, responded to allegations that her government was trying to manipulate grade readings. She argued that action is concentrated where pollution peaks are highest.

"Tell me, what is a hotspot? A hotspot is an area with the highest pollution levels. Right? What is the solution? You spray there, you water it. You work to improve the soil. So, you will spray only on the hotspot," she said.

The chief minister also compared the AQI display to temperature readings and justified the use of water at critical points.

"Does using a monitor bring down the AQI? AQI is like a temperature which you can know from any instrument, so watering it is the only solution which we are also doing," she said.
