Puducherry, Nov 23: Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) Puducherry leader V Saminathan today said the Centre's drive against black money and corruption aims at eradicating poverty and augmenting development of the nation.

President of local unit of the party V Saminathan in a release here said, those opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fight against black money are "anti-poor and self-centred" as they have no concern for the development of the nation.

He further claimed that demonetisation of high value currency notes "is an effective panacea to weed out black money and launch an attack on those hoarding it and holding the country to ransom."

Charging the Congress with pampering those encouraging corruption and black money, Saminathan said those who were cornered by the present steps taken by the Centre were feigning to be champions of the poor and were resorting to agitations against it.

"People will never let the designs of the opposition succeed as Modi's measure has earned the appreciation of a big chunk of population," he said.

Earlier this month, the government demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, replacing them with new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 bills in an effort to root out black money and terror funding.

The decision has had a severe impact on the lives of the people as massive cash crunch hit the entire nation.

People faced grave incovenience as everyone queued up in front of banks and ATMs to get hold of valid currency notes.
