Valentine’s Day Ban: Nandi Hills Shut Over Traffic Rush, Drunken Behaviour Fears

Chikkaballapura officials are shutting down Nandi Hills to all visitors on February 14-Valentine's Day. No one gets in, and no vehicles either, from 6 in the morning to 6 in the evening.

Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Prabhu has issued an order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The police pushed for it, mainly because they're worried about safety and keeping things under control.

Nandi Hills sits pretty close to Bengaluru, and it's always packed on weekends and festival days. Crowds swell, cars line up for ages, and parking turns into a total mess. The narrow, twisting road up the hill? It doesn't help-traffic just gets out of hand.

On a typical busy day, the place sees about 16,000 to 18,000 visitors, with nearly 5,000 vehicles climbing up. This year, Valentine's Day lands on a Saturday, so officials are bracing for a rush: they're guessing 15,000 to 20,000 people could show up, which would push the roads way past their limit.

But it's not just about traffic. The authorities worry about drunken antics, indecent behavior, and people causing trouble in big crowds. There's also the risk of folks wandering into off-limits or dangerous spots up on the hill. With a large number of visitors there is a possibility of unruly behaviour, which could also harm the fragile flora & fauna of the hill station.

Packed slopes and steep drops make accidents more likely, and if something does go wrong, help would take longer to arrive because of the crowded, winding road. To keep things in check, police will strictly enforce the ban and take legal action against anyone who tries to break the rules. Security teams will guard the main entry points to turn visitors away.

Nandi Hills pulls in thousands from Bengaluru and nearby towns, especially for sunrise. But this Valentine's Day, it's off-limits-for everyone.
