Srinagar, Sep 10 (UNI) Stressing the need for making education job oriented, Governor Lt General (Retd) S K Sinha today said there was a need to produce graduates with self earning capabilities and not for Government jobs only.

This, he said, would be beneficial for the society as a whole.

The governor was speaking after inaugurating the National Seminar cum workshop on Higher Education Sector Quality Value Based Education sponsored by national Assessment and Accreditation Council and organised by Inter Quality Assurance cell at Government Degree College, Bemina here today.

He said equipped with high standard professional academies young Indians were creating waves on the basis of their education and intellectual prowess all around the world.

We have come a long way since colonial era when Indians were taken as indentured labour, working as slaves in different parts of the world, he said, adding that now the presence of younger generation was recognised all around and our students were making an indelible mark in specialised fields.

The governor said this portrayed the picture of a new India emerging as a major global power of tomorrow.

Elaborating on making the education job oriented, keeping in view the needs of the job market, General Sinha said graduates should be equipped with employability capabilities of the highest order.

The Governor dwelt on the historical perspective of education and said that emphasis had been laid on education by all the societies in all the times. In this context, he referred to Prophet Mohammed who had said ''if need be one must go to distant places including China for acquiring education.'' General Sinha said East had developed education much earlier than the people in West which was substantiated by the discovery of zero and astronomical finding of the world being round. With the advent of time, the West made big strides in the field of education and the East showed a slight resistance, initially, towards West education.

The education system, he said, has undergone a big shift with specialisations in every field. He said this called for designing education as per the needs of the changing times.

On the value based education, the Governor dismissed the apprehensions that modern education was too materialistic and said with proper guidance and direction in consonance with our glorious heritage and culture, the youth could be prepared for meeting all the challenges of th modern world.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi's famous words, ''I want to keep windows of my mind open to winds from outside while keeping my feet firmly on my soil'' he hoped that this would inspire the participants to deliberate on the sensitive subject of value based education.
