Chandigarh, Aug 24:To infuse scientific temper among rural students, the Punjab Government has decided to start senior secondary (science stream) classes on an experimental basis in 18 ITIs, polytechnic and engineering colleges in the state.

The decision was taken yesterday by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during a meeting held at his office here.

He said the underlying objective of this move was to impart education in science stream to the students with rural background to enable them to get admission in polytechnics and engineering colleges.

He pointed out that there was a wide disparity in the standard of education in urban and rural areas and it must be narrowed down by providing equal opportunities of education.

He said there were few schools in the rural areas which were equipped with proper infrastructure for science education while the remaining, had neither adequate staff nor infrastructure to impart science education to the students up to senior secondary level.

Therefore, the government took a conscious decision to undertake senior secondary classes in the 18 ITIs, polytechnics and engineering colleges on trial basis because they had efficient staff as well as requisite infrastructure.
