New Delhi, July 6 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission has (NHRC) recommended human rights education as a main subject at all levels from primary to post-graduate to ensure attitudinal changes about human rights among young Indians.

The recommendations -- 'Human Rights Model Curriculum for Universities and Module for Teachers Training in School Education', a two part publications -- were launched by Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh today at a function here.

In his inaugural address at the National Consultation on the recommendations, Mr Singh said education should act as a sound foundation to inculcate human rights value among children and young adults.

''Human Rights should become an essential part for the protection and promotion of wide range of knowledge for betterment of social, economic and cultural affairs,'' he added.

''It is important that the seeds of sensitivity are sown at an early stage which would go a long way in ensuring civilised society,'' he said.

The Union Minister said the rights are already enshrined in the Constitution and only awareness is needed.

''Concepts of human rights should be made universal frame of reference,'' he added.

NHRC Chairperson S Rajendra Babu said through the learning of human rights as a way of life, fundamental change can be brought about to eliminate or eradicate poverty, ignorance, prejudice and discrimination based on sex, caste, religion and disability.

''Right to Education forms an integral part of major international instruments on human rights,'' he added.
