Teachers oppose involving them in mid-day meal scheme

Mysore, May 7 (UNI) School Teachers in Karnataka have expressed their displeasure over involving them in mid-day meal scheme stating that it affects their concentration on teaching.

Disclosing this to newspersons here, Dr Hanumanthappa, head of the Legislative Council Committee set up to study the need for continuation of School Development Monitoring Committee (SDMC), said during visit to the schools some teachers had shared their views that it was difficult for them to concentrate on teaching while attending to the mid-day meal scheme.

The Committee would take note of this complaint and consider relief to the teachers from the scheme, he added. The Committee would submit its report to the government in four weeks.

The Committee visited some schools in the city and held meeting with officials and teachers and heard the grievances. The SDMC had been set up to suggest measures to improve the standard of education both in government and private schools in the state.

Stating that the Committee would go in detail on the SDMC functioning, Dr Hanumanthappa ruled out the possibility abolishing the Committee saying that majority favoured its continuation.

He said that it was also contemplated to include three lady members compulsorily in the SDMC. There are nearly 1.5 women teachers of the total 3.5 lakhs in the state.

The committee would visit the other three revenue divisions in the coming days before preparing the draft report. It also called a high level meeting in Bangalore on May 28 to discuss the issues.
