Rajkot, Dec 13 (UNI) The 'Paniwala Mayor' (water mayor), as he was called, BJP MLA from Rajkot Mr Vajubhai Vala, who was today re-inducted into Narendra Modi's cabinet, had quit the Gujarat government over a year ago to become the state BJP President.
He recently resigned from the post to make way for Mr Purshottam Rupala.
Mr Vala became the mayor of Rajkot in 1983.
He made his maiden debut as a BJP MLA in 1985 from the Rajkot constituency.
During the 1986 drought in Gujarat, regions like Saurashtra and Rajkot were the worst affected. Mr Vala played a heroic role during that crisis. He represented the case of the region before the State Government in his capacity as the Mayor. As a Mayor and as a MLA, he had represented the case before the State Government and made arrangements of water for Rajkot city from various dams. He had even arranged water through trains to Rajkot city and surrounding areas to ease the drinking water problems.
Since then he became known as 'Paniwala' Mayor.
He has presented Budget 11 times as a Gujarat Finance Minister in the House.
Mr Vala was Rashtriya Swayam Sevak (RSS) member since childhood and entered into public life when he was just a school boy. He had completed his LL.B from Dharmendrasinh college here.
He remained the Chairman of the Rajkot Nagarik Sahakri Bank from 1975-76 to 1981-82 and thereafter from 1987-90.
He was jailed for eleven months during emergency in 1975.
Mr Vala continued to be elected from Rajkot-ll seat since 1985.
He vacated his Assembly seat in 2001 for Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
He was Urban Development Minister in 1990 for short duration.
Mr Vala has held various portfolios since 1990 such as Energy, Petrochemicals, Finance and Revenue.
