Hazaribagh, Jun 21 (UNI) Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee today stressed on spreading quality education coupled with three-fold strategy to achieve lasting development in the country.

In his three-fold strategy, Mr Mukherjee said new schools, colleges and universities should be established in backward areas.

Secondly, the existing education system needed to be strengthened and finally open and distance education should be expanded.

After Independence the country has made progress on all fronts, particularly in the past decade, Mr Mukherjee said on the occasion of third convocation ceremony of Vinoba Bhave University here.

The Defence Minister claimed that in the tenth plan, the country was about to register seven per cent GDP and ''we are in striking distance of making it double digit''.

''But we have to ensure equal distribution of resources and must focus on the developmental programmes targetting the weaker and backward sections of the society,'' he said.

Mr Mukherjee pointed out that 50 per cent of country's population was below 25 years, which was a positive factor, and that was why most of the developed countries were now looking towards India and China to utilise such skilled human resources.

Elaborating his suggestion on quality education, he said the standard of education should be at par in all educational institutions besides change of old syllabus.

Referring to Jharkhand's rich mineral resources and tribal population, he said institutions should be developed to make extensive study with focus on geological research, anthropology and issues related to tribal society.
