Nirbhaya case listed for July 11 before 3 judge bench of SC

New Delhi, July 7: A three judge bench will hear the Nirbhaya matter on July 11. The three judge bench would comprise Justices Dipak Misra, C Nagappan and Banumathi.

The Bench would hear an appeal filed by the accused who had challenged the death sentences awarded to them.

A fast track court which began proceedings on January 17 2013 took 8 months to dispose off the matter. The court had handed out death sentences to the accused in the case. The matter then went up to the Delhi High Court for confirmation of the death sentences.

The High Court took six months time and confirmed the death sentences.

The convicts then moved the Supreme Court on March 15 2014. The matter has witnessed delays since then. On one occasion the supreme court was unhappy with the quality of the defence counsel. It appointed two amicus curiae to assist the court.

Now the matter has been listed on July 11 before a three judge bench. The bench is expected to expedite the hearing in the matter and complete the appeal which was filed over two years back.
