In his tweet, Modi said, "I Congratulate Nitish ji on joining the fight against corruption...125 crore people welcome and support this honesty."

The situation had become increasingly difficult for Nitish to continue after Tajashwi, who is facing graft charges, refused to step down.

Reports suggest that BJP is set to hold a meeting on Wednesday evening and may lend outside support to Nitish.

JD (U) has 71 seats and BJP has 53 seats in the Bihar Assembly. If BJP decides to support Nitish then they will have 124 seats in the 243 seat Bihar Assembly.

Speaking to the media, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad refrained from divulging in clear terms about their future course of action, but said that they have worked with Nitish for a long time in the past.

"This (RJD-JDU) alliance was a mismatch. It was forged out of fear of BJP. Nitish was part of NDA government in the past and we have worked with him," he said.
