Kerala, Puducherry MLAs got richer over 5 years

Bengaluru, May 14: The average assets of the MLAs in Puducherry in the year 2011 was Rs 4.87 crore. In the year 2016 the average assets of the re-contesting MLAs has Rs 11.92 crore. This means the average asset increase of the re-contesting candidates is Rs 7.05 crore.

Puducherry Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the affidavits of 27 outgoing MLAs who are contesting again in the 2016 Puducherry Assembly Elections.

Average Assets in 2011 Elections

The average assets of these 27 re-contesting MLAs fielded by various parties including independents in 2011 were Rs 4.87 crores (Rs. 4, 87, 76, 060).

Average Assets in 2016 Elections: The average assets of these 27 re-contesting MLAs in 2016 is Rs 11.92 crores (Rs. 11, 92, 31,184).

Average Asset change from 2011 to 2016: The average assets of these 27 re- contesting MLAs, between the Puducherry Elections of 2011 and 2016 increased by Rs. 7.04 crores (Rs. 7, 04,55,123).

Percentage change in assets from 2011 to 2016​:​ Average percentage increase in assets for these 27 re-contesting MLAs is 144%.

Average asset change of re-contesting MLAs: Party-Wise

The table below provides the party-wise categorization of increase in average assets of re-contesting MLAs. Financial details of 27 re-contesting MLAs fielded by various political parties have been taken from the recently filed affidavits by these MLAs and the values of these financial assets have been compared to the corresponding values of the assets that the MLAs showed in their affidavits in 2011.

The MLAs who are recontesting the elections in Kerala got richer by 1.66 crore in the past five years.

Average Assets in 2011 Elections: The average assets of these 97 re-contesting MLAs fielded by various parties including independents in 2011 were Rs 1.80 crores (Rs. 1, 80, 64, 906).

Average Assets in 2016 Elections: The average assets of these 97 re-contesting MLAs in 2016 is Rs 3.47 crores (Rs. 3, 47, 60,081).

Average Asset change from 2011 to 2016: The average assets of these 97 re- contesting MLAs, between the Kerala Elections of 2011 and 2016 increased by Rs. 1.66 crores (Rs. 1, 66,95,175).

Percentage change in assets from 2011 to 2016 Average percentage increase in assets for these 97 re-contesting MLAs is 92%.

Top five asset increase

Thomas Chandy of the NCP worth Rs 45 crore in 2011 now has assets worth Rs 92 crore. Kerala Congress B candidate K Ganesh Kumar was worth just Rs 1 crore in 2011 and in 2016 his assets are worth Rs 22 crore.

The JD(U) candidate M V Shreya MS Kumar's assets rose from Rs 8 crore to Rs 23 crore between 2011 and 2016. Kuruvilla of the Congress M is richer by Rs 8 crore. HIs assets in 2016 are worth Rs 17 crore as opposed to Rs 8 what he had in 2011.

Shibu Baby John of the Revolutionary Socialist Party today has assets worth Rs 19 crore while in 2011 he was worth Rs 10 crore.
