Dr Satheesh takes over Scientific Advisor to Parrikar; chants Make in India mantra
New Delhi, June 4: Five days after the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) cleared one of the most-awaited appointments, Dr G Satheesh Reddy took over as the Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister (SA to RM) on Thursday.
As SA to RM, Dr Satheesh will now act as the eyes and ears of India's Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. He would advise Parrikar on matters mostly related to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Appointed for a period of two years, the 51-and-a-half-year-old missile scientist has made immense contributions to navigation and avionics technologies. Dr Satheesh has been heading Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a critical laboratory under Missile Complex.
The Ministry of Defence quoted Dr Satheesh as that he would strive hard to bring in a synergy between the armed forces, DRDO and industries.
"I will identify the technologies and products which are being imported today and put all out efforts to get them Made in India. We have to create a conducive eco-system for strengthening manufacturing base in the country to enable industries to be potential long-term suppliers of defence equipment," Dr Satheesh said.
He said modalities would be worked out for encouraging industries to invest in R&D and make them part of major national defence programmes.
"There is a huge pool of talent and core expertise available in academic institutes of the country. I will identify the competence and promote focused research in academic institutes and harness their potential to meet the technological challenges and also to come up with state-of-the-art technologies," the SA to RM said.
Sources told OneIndia that Dr Satheesh had a detailed meeting with the Parrikar after taking over charge.
"He took charge at the South Block at 2.30 pm, and his office will be situated at DRDO Bhavan for the time being," an official told OneIndia.
Sources confirmed that he would soon have an indepth review of the Tejas programme, which is inching towards the Final Operational Clearance.
