Dense Smog And Low Temperatures Grip Delhi-NCR, Flights Delayed; Weather Update For UP, Punjab And Kashmir

Residents of Delhi-NCR got no relief from the cold as they woke up to temperatures around 6 degrees Celsius on January 17, 2026. Dense fog reduced visibility to as low as 150 metres.

The minimum temperature is likely to remain between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius, while the maximum may stay around 16 to 17 degrees Celsius. Cold winds, high humidity and limited sunlight are expected to make the weather feel even colder.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the region due to moderate to dense fog during morning hours. Visibility may drop sharply, affecting road, rail and air travel. Fog mixed with smog could also worsen air quality, especially during early mornings and late evenings.

The IMD has also advised elderly people, children and those with health problems to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Doctors have suggested staying warm, drinking hot fluids and eating immunity-boosting foods.

While no severe cold wave is expected over the next four days, fog is likely to remain the main concern.

Temperatures may rise slightly after January 20, but another cold spell is expected between January 23 and 26, with chances of light rain later next week. Winter conditions are far from over in North India.

Uttar Pradesh Under Thick Fog Cover

Uttar Pradesh continues to struggle with dense fog across several districts. More than 50 districts reported thick fog on Friday morning, with visibility dropping to nearly zero in some areas. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for 53 districts, warning people about extremely low visibility.

In about 19 districts, cold and icy winds are expected during the day, which may further increase the chill. Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions while stepping outdoors.

Cold Conditions in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Kashmir

Punjab and Haryana remain under the grip of intense cold. In some areas, minimum temperatures have dropped close to 1 degree Celsius. Haryana's Bhiwani recorded a low of around 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Rajasthan is also witnessing severe cold, with cities like Alwar, Nagaur, Fatehpur and Karauli recording minimum temperatures close to 3 degrees Celsius. Jaipur reported a low of 9.5 degrees Celsius, adding to the winter discomfort.

The Kashmir Valley has seen slight relief during daytime, but nights continue to remain freezing. Srinagar recorded a temperature of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, while Pulwama saw the mercury fall to minus 4.6 degrees. Frost and icy conditions continue to affect many areas.
