2001 death row convict slashed wrist, private parts
Bangalore, Aug 21: Amidst denial and acceptance by the Hindalga Central Prison authorities in Belgaum, it has been confirmed that Shivu Munishetty, one of the two death row convicts, supposed to have been hung today, slashed his wrist and private parts and is being treated at a hospital.
The duo had filed a mercy petition with the President last week, which was rejected. Although suspected to have slashed his wrist with razor, Chief Superintendent of the jail G. Veerabhadraswamy denies saying that he had done so with a piece of tile used for roofing of a building.
"Nothing serious, it is just a minor injury and there was no problem," he further added.
Sources further said that he was being treated at the prison hospital and was not required to be shifted to any other place. However, there are unconfirmed reports of Shivu making cuts in several parts of the body with a razor, despite tight security.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning after his family members met him at the jail premises. Convicted of the rape and murder of an 18 year old girl, he and his accomplice were charged by the district and sessions court in Chamarajanagar.
After the incident, justice P. Sadashivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi have adjourned the death sentence of Shivu and Jadeswamy by four weeks, after hearing a petition from Advocate Vishwanath who is fighting their case.
