Dhaka, March 23: Twenty people have been killed in a tornado which ripped through 20 villages in eastern Bangladesh on Friday, a government official said on Saturday. Three hundred people were injured in the storm.
Initial reports said at least 10 people were killed and a newspaper report said 500 people were injured in the storm which had lashed distant villages in Brahmanbaria district, more than 100 kilometres south-east from here.
Local chief government administrator Noor Mohammad Majumder said on Saturday that the death toll had touched 20.
The 15-minute storm destroyed several houses and shops besides uprooting trees and electricity poles.
Local villagers and emergency personnel took the injured to the hospitals, reports said.
