CWG: Was PM aware of all wrongdoings by Suresh Kalmadi?
One of the nightmares of the UPA - irregularities during Commonwealth Games 2010, which was conducted in the national capital, returned back to haunt the government.
The letter, as sources informed that the union sports ministers, who were in charge since 2004, alerted the PM about various irregularities in the CWG organising committee (OC) led by the then chief Suresh Kalmadi.
The letter claimed that late Sunil Dutt, his successor Mani Shanker Aiyar and M S Gill had repeatedly informed Manmohan Singh about the activities of the CWG OC.
Dutt reportedly had urged the authorities to appoint some "Government nominee" as the chief of the OC, however, Kalmadi was named as the chief. Dutt also had alleged that the Prime Minister Office (PMO) did not response to "various aspects of composition of Organising Committee."
Then Aiyar, in a letter to the PM, had mentioned that the OC was "squandering" money by appointing consultants with cost of upto 5,000 US Dollars per day and providing Rs two crore farm house and monthly first class air ticket to Mike Hooper of Commonwealth Games Federation, as media reports said.
Media reports highlighted some part of Aiyar's letter which states, "Without a drastic overhaul of both the Executive Board and Organising Committee for the Commonwealth Games, I fear it will prove to be practically impossible for the Government to significantly address the excesses of Chairman Suresh Kalmadi and his cohorts."
Gill also reportedly complained that the OC "rarely" met and endorsed "post facto decisions taken in high centralised manner".
Citing all these fresh allegations against the PM, many started speculating the "pathetic" situation of the UPA government, especially Manmohan Singh who have already engagged in a spat over issues like Lokpal bill, Anna Hazare, 2G spectrum scam and so on..
