Carcass of leopard recovered

Lakhimpur, Feb 21 (PTI) Carcass of a leopard was found inKhairati in south Kheri forest division here, a senior forestofficial said today.

"The carcass of a leopard was found hanging from a tree,"Range Officer Om Prakash said, adding that the killers hangedthe dead body to the tree with a cable and fled away.

When asked Divisional Forest Officer Ramesh Kumar Jha ofsouth Kheri division told PTI that no other injury marksbarring the injury around the beast''s waist, were detected onthe carrion.

"An inquiry by sub divisional officer has been orderedin to the matter while an FIR, under various sections ofWildlife Protection Act, has been lodged," he said.

The carcass has been sent to IVRI, Bareilly for anautopsy, he added.

A few months back, some poachers had attempted to poach ayoung leopard with an iron clamp in Kishunpur Sanctuary areabut he was rescued alive with a severe injury in one of itslegs.

Earlier on December 26, 2010, a leopard was found dead,hanging to a tree in Kishunpur forests.

The park authorities carried out a probe into the matterand arrests were made. On February 11 last, the north Kheriforest authorities recovered a leopard skin from the city.
