Attempt to rob rs.14 lakh foiled, one arrested

Coimbatore,Feb21 (PTI) A woman cashier of a nationalisedbank at nearby Tirupur today foiled the attempt of two maskedmen to decamp with Rs.14 lakh, which they had robbed atknifepoint.

Police said the two men, covering their faces with clothesand wearing helmets, entered the Canara Bank at Kongunagar,when cashier Saraswati was alone in the cabin, while otherswere having lunch inside.

One person threatened the cashier at knife point andremoved rs.14 lakh from there and rushed outside to join hisfriend, who was ready with his motorcycle to flee.

Saraswati immediately pressed the alarm button and alertedthe staff, who rushed out and managed to pull down the pillionrider and the bag containing the cash, they said.

Some passers-by also started chasing the other person onthe motorcycle and in the melee, he inflicted knife injurieson one of the public, police said.

Police are interrogating the pillion rider.
