Masi Magam festival celebrated with gaiety in Puducherry
Puducherry,Feb 18 (PTI): Masi Magam festival,an importantreligious ceremony here, was celebrated today with gaiety andreligious fervour, with people from Puducherry and Tamil Naduthronging the seashore at Vaithikuppam to offer worship todieties of a large number of temples.
The deities, including from temples of Subramania Swami ofMailam, Poyyamozhi Vinayakar from Theevanur and RangasanathaSwami of Gingee (all from neighbouring districts of Tamilnadu)and local temples like Sri Manakula Vinayakar, were installedon the seashore for theerthavaari (sprinkling of water).
Masi magam festival takes place every year in the Tamilmonth of Maasi (February to March) on the occurrence of thezodiac star Magam.
Special pandals were erected to house each of the deitiesin a row on the sea shore. The festival has been among theimportant events right from pre-merger days.
Police were deployed in strength to ensure that the festivalpassed off smoothly. People had a dip in the Bay of Bengalbefore offering worship at the deities.
