New Delhi, Dec 13: Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that the growing number of migrants in Delhi is main the reason for increase of crime rates in the capital city.

Chidambaram said that the migrant labours who settled in North-Western parts of Delhi were behind the crimes. He added that the migrants have behaviours which are not acceptable to modern societies.

"There is a decline in crime in Delhi. Nevertheless, crime takes place because Delhi attracts a large number of migrants, There are a large number of unauthorised colonies, and these migrants who settle in unauthorized colonies, carry a kind of behaviour that is unacceptable in any modern city so crimes do take place," said P Chidambaram.

Home Minister's remarks came in wake of increasing rape crimes in Delhi.

On Saturday, Dec 11, an 18-year-old girl was gangraped in Sultanpuri while going to pick-up her mother who works in a nearby factory. Police has arrested four people in connection with the rape.

Earlier in Nov, a BPO employee was gangraped by a group of people. Culprits abducted her while returning after job and raped in a moving car.

Meanwhile, Chidambaram's remarks have sparked for a new political controversy. Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) leaders slammed him and said that his comments were against the Fundamental Rights of citizens.

BJP said that Chidambaram was speaking like Raj Thackeray, who asked non-Maharastrians to go out of Maharashtra.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav also thrashed PC saying that he can't blame others for increasing crimes in Delhi. Other opposition leaders said that Delhi government has failed to provide security for women in country's capital.
