Earthquake in Indonesia, tsunami warning lifted
Jakarta, Jun 16: The tsunami warning provided by Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency has been lifted.
Tsunamy warning has been given after a powerful earthquake hit eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, sending the residents flee from the buildings in panic. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1.
The tremor occured late Wednesday, Jun 16 morning around 10:16 am (Jakarta time). It was centred 33 kilometres beneath the ocean floor off the northern coast of Papua province. The main shock was followed by two another of 6.6 and 5.3 on the Richter scale respectively.
The residents in the coastal areas flew fearing tsunami. There were no initial reports of damage or casualties, though several buildings cracked in the quake.
