Ruling MNF announces candidates for Mizo polls

Aizawl, Nov 6 (UNI) Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front supremo Zoramthanga today announced the names of his party candidates for the December 2 Assembly elections.

The MNF would contest 37 seats, while two had been given to its ally Mizoram Congress Party (MCP) and one to another ally Maraland Democratic Front(MDF).

MNF president Zoramthanga would contest from his traditional constituency Champhai North and the neighbouring Champhai South, both near the Indo-Myanmar border.

Assembly Speaker Lalchamliana would contest from Aizawl North-II, while Home Minister Tawnluia had shifted from Zawlnuam to Aizawl South III.

One of MNF top brass and Health Minister R Tlanghmingthanga would contest from two seats - home constituency Aizawl South-I constituency and Aizawl West-I.

The MNF also fielded one woman candidate, Lalhlimpuii, who had been a Minister under the Laldenga-led MNF government in 1987-1988.

She would contest the election from Hrangturzo constituency.

While the list comprised nine newcomers, two sitting MLAs did not get place. Among the newcomers were C Lalruatkima, who has resigned as general secretary of the state's largest NGO Central Young Mizo Association, and C Ramhluna, who had taken voluntary retirement as state's Chief Principal Conservator of Forest.

Meanwhile, Congress sources said here today that the party would announce its candidates after the return of its party chief Lal Thanhawla from Delhi, where he sought formal approval of the party high command on the candidates.
