GSL bags Raksha Mantri's award for excellence in ship design
Panaji, Sep 13 (UNI) The Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has bagged the coveted Raksha Mantri's Award for excellence for the year 2006-07.
Defence minister A K Anthony on November seven will present the award in New Delhi.
In order to meet the growing demand for Offshore Patrol Vessels, the Vasco-da-Gama-based GSL embarked on a major exercise in developing designs of various types of Patrol Vessels from 50 to 105 meters in length.
The 50-meter Patrol Vessel of 35 knots speed designed and built by GSL for Indian Coast Guard was a great success. Seven such vessels had already been delivered to the Coast Guard.
The GSL has so far indigenously designed four variants of Offshore Patrol Vessels 50M, 90M, 102M and 105M. This core expertise was designated as 'Design to Deployment'.
''It was a test of innovation and creativity since a new design had to be developed to meet the specific customized requirement. The bestowal of the award is the result of the dedicated efforts of engineers, designers, technicians and all the workers of the Shipyard,'' according to Rear Admiral A K Handa, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL.
