Chennai, Aug 14 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor S S Barnala today greeted the people of the country and Indians residing abroad on the eve of Independence Day and called for efforts to uproot terrorism.

In his message, he described terrorism as an act of cowardice and said it wreaks brutality on the innocent people.

''While the State and the Central Governments are fighting against this menace, it also requires public vigil and support to uproot terrorism,'' he added.

''Let us be cautious on the destructive forces which try to destabilise our economy,'' he said, according to a Raj Bhavan communique.

Mr Barnala said, ''Independence Day is an occasion to refresh our thoughts, salute and pay our homage to the great galaxy of freedom fighters, who sacrificed their lives for our nation's freedom.'' ''Indians today have before them a great energy of positive growth and are in the threshold of becoming a developed nation,'' he said, adding that the message of India to the rest of the world has been one of peace and friendship.

Let us take the pledge to preserve our nation's integrity and sovereignty and show our solidarity and work towards its progress and prosperity, he added.
