Rio assures 33% quota for women in Municipalities
Kohima, Aug 9 (UNI) Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has assured the Nagaland Women Commission(NWC) of implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in the state's municipal bodies.
According to an NWC release issued here today, the chief minister gave the assurance during a meeting recently and the Commission had expressed confidence that the government would ensure implementation of the reservation by amending the state's Municipal Act.
The Commission also appealed to all to 'bring about equality' in the Naga society by supporting the entry of women in the decision making in all towns and municipalities.
Since Nagaland attained statehood, only Ms Rano Saiza had represented Nagaland in the Lok Sabha. No woman has entered the Legislative Assembly. Only a few women councillors had been elected in some Municipal Councils and Town Committees.
