PIL challenging new Tamil New Year dismissed
Chennai, Apr 30 (UNI) Madras High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation, challenging the Tamil New Year (Declaration) Bill, declaring the first day of Tamil month 'Thai' as Tamil New Year's day.
Dismissing the petition, filed by K R Ramasamy alias Traffic Ramasamy, Mr Justice S J Mukhopadhyaya termed the petition frivolous and observed that it was aimed at maligning the political parties and leaders. He imposed Rs 10,000 as costs on the petitioner, which should be paid to the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority within six weeks.
The court said this was one of the cases where no public interest was involved and that the assertions made in the petition also appeared to be motivated.
The petitioner had neither enclosed a copy of the Bill passed by the Assembly nor made any pleading with regard to the Bill, and just on the basis of newspaper reports had made assertions against parties and leaders.
