Varanasi, Mar 15: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said Uttar Pradesh was lagging behind in development for the past few years and should work to regain its lost glory at the earliest.
Addressing the 90th convocation of the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) here, Dr Singh said, ''The importance of development and mordernisation should be spread among all.'' UP would have to come forward as one of the developed states, he said adding that farmers, labourers, workers and youth should reap the benefit of mordernisation.
''The basic structure of the state needs to be made stronger...50 years back, the industrial sector of UP was flourishing,'' the Prime Minister said.
''Earlier, Allahabad and Varanasi used to be the education hubs, Kanpur was an industrial city and Lucknow was known for art and culture,'' the PM recalled.
