Union Cabinet approves amendments to route of Asian Highways

New Delhi, Feb 14 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for proposing to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(UNESCAP) amendments to the route of AH-2 and AH-18 for consideration by the Working Group on Asian Highway.

The amendments relate to the route of AH-2 and AH-48 defined in the List of Asian Highway routes of the Inter- Governmental Agreement on Asian Highway Netork.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told newsperons here that the amendments will help in increasing trade and tourism in the region.

The Amendments approved by the Cabiet are as follows: (a)Including "Phulbari' between Banglabandha and Siliguri and defining the route of AH-2 at this location as 'Banglabandha- Phulbari- Siliguri- Kakarbhitta.' (b) Providing link to Bhutan by extending route of AH-48 from "Thimpu-Phuentshoing-Hasmira- Jaigon- Phulbari' in place of 'Phuentsholing- Border of India', as indicated now, and consquently connect with AH-2 at Phulbari in India.

Mr Dasmunsi said extending the AH- 48 from Thimphu- Phuentsholing(Bhutan) to Jaigaon, Border Point in India, and giving conectivity of Asian Higway Route from Bhutan to India, as well as to both Bangladesh and Nepal will improve the prospects of trade.
