Nine killed, three injured in train accident near Digha
Digha, Jan 15 (UNI) At least nine people were killed and three others seriously injured today when the 2867 Shalimar Express hit a rickshaw van at an unmanned level crossing in Badalpur village under Contai police station.
East Midnapur District Magistrate (DM) Anup Agarwal said the accident occured when the train hit the rickshaw van, carrying twelve people from Badalpur to Digha, killing nine people on the spot.
''The injured were rushed to the Contai Sub-Divisional Hospital where their condition was stated to be critical,'' the DM added.
The Contai Sub-Divisional Officer had rushed to the spot.
South Eastern Railway (SER) sources said a relief train from Kharagpur had been sent to the spot. A medical team as well as senior officials had already rushed there.
The accident occurred about 76 km from the sea town of Digha.
