New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) today issued notices to the Chairman, Governing Body of St Stephen's College, Delhi University and the UGC, on a petition challenging the appointment of Walson Thampu as Principal of the college and two others as lecturers.

The petition filed by one Shital Prasad Singh challenged the appointment of Mr Thampu and M S Frank and N Raghunathan as lecturers, terming them as instances of maladministration.

He contended that Mr Thampu's appointment was illegal as he did not possess the minimum qualifications required for the post.

Hearing the petition, NCMEI chairperson M S A Siddique and member B S Ramoowalia, said they found it just and expedient in the interest of maintaining the standards of excellence expected of educational institutions to issue notices to the authorities to explain their stand on the issue.

The notices are returnable by November 13.
