New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Delhi's top jewellers figure among several establishments employing child labour, right in the heart of the city, despite a ban on their working and continuous raids by law enforcement agencies to prevent the scourge.

Among the 93 children rescued from jewellery units in Karol Bagh on May 19, several disclosed that they worked for city's prominent jewellers like Krishna Jewellers, P P Jewellers, P C Jewellers, Gandhi Jewellers, N C Jewellers and Champa Jewellers, according to Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) chairman Kailash Satyarthi.

Besides, complaints of no wages for months, torture for not complying with orders, and getting beaten even at small mistakes was routine with them, he said.

Though the children have been rescued the contractors and employers are still roaming scot free, he said adding until they were brought to book the inhuman practice of bondage and child labour would continue.

Claiming that there were nearly 3,000 children in Karol Bagh alone and working under horryfying conditions, Mr Satyarthi said dangerous chemicals like lead were used for making gold ornaments and during polishing of gold ornaments which were hazardous to health.
