Hubli, Dec 20 (UNI) Karnataka Home Minister M P Prakash today presented the prestigious TSR award for 2005 to eminent journalist Surendra Dani at a colourful function here.

The award, which carried a citation and a purse of Rs one lakh, was presented every year to an eminent journalist in Kannada journalism.

Mr Prakash, who presented the award in the absence of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, lauded Mr Dani's contribution to Kannada journalism and suggested that journalism should help build an opinion and not be decision-oriented. It should guide and not clamp a decision.

State Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti inaugurated the function, while Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar presided. Eminent classical vocalist 'Padmavibhushan' Gangubai Hangal was present on the occasion.

Replying to the honour, Mr Dani said he was happy that the award had for the first time crossed river Tungabhadra and reached the cultural capital of the State -- Hubli-Dharwad.

He expressed unhappiness at the print media falling in the hands of capitalists and said it should be run on cooperative basis or handled by a trust committed for the welfare of the people.
