Ramadoss to receive Luther L. Terry Award
New Delhi, Jul 11 (UNI) Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss will receive the Luther L Terry Award won by his ministry for its leadership in enacting a national tobacco control law during the 'World Conference on Tobacco or Health' in Washington on Friday.
The Health Ministry had won the award in the category of exemplary leadership by a government ministry in recognition of its consistent excellence in anti-tobacco advocacy.
According to the Ministry, the award has been conferred on it for the ''progressive enthusiasm'' showed since 1990 in enacting a national tobacco control legislation and the ''unwavering leadership'' provided by the Indian delegation at the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in spite of strong opposition from the domestic and global tobacco industry.
''Though India is a tobacco growing and exporting country with large scale employment in that sector, the Ministry of Health consistently advocated strong measures for tobacco control both among the policy maker and the public over the last decade,'' the Ministry said.
