Melbourne, Jan 16: India's head coach Duncan Fletcher has revealed why all-rounder Stuart Binny was selected for ICC World Cup 2015.
There was lot of criticism and also discussions on social media on Binny's selection in India's final 15-man squad for the big tournament, which starts next month. (Team India Guide)
However, there was no official version on why the Karnataka all-rounder was preferred over other players including the experienced Yuvraj Singh.
Today, speaking to BCCI's website, Fletcher has come out in support of Binny and has given reasons for his inclusion for the quadrennial showpiece event. (India have good chance to win World Cup: Fletcher)
When asked whether Team India had a quality all-rounder for the World Cup, Fletcher said: "That's one area that makes me a bit nervous. What we need in these conditions is a good batting all-rounder who bowls seam. That will add depth in our batting and give us that extra bowler."
"That is the real reason why we have Stuart Binny in the squad. We'll have to have a close look at him here because batting deep is going to be very, very important in this World Cup," he added.
Fletcher said it was important for Indian batsmen to bowl a bit too in the World Cup.
"I think it's very critical that our top batsmen bowl a bit too. I genuinely believe that some of our batsmen have very, very good bowling actions. They just need to put it into practice in the nets. If they really put in a good effort, they could turn into really good spin bowlers," he said.
India are the defending champions at the World Cup and open campaign against Pakistan on February 15 in Adelaide.
